Open House
A New Musical Film by Dan Mirvish

Because finding a home should be something to sing about.

The Short

Recently, Dan got the opportunity to direct a short version of Open House. The Seattle Film Festival's Fly Filmmaking series invites three directors to shoot a short during one week of the festival. Directors were given one day to cast, two days to shoot and 30 hours to edit (plus an unlimited supply of Red Bull). Other than the director, the cast and crew are entirely Seattle-based (and would not necessarily be used in the production of the feature version). The shorts were shot on DV, and have since been transferred to 35mm film by Vancouver-based Digital Film Group. For a complete cast and crew list of the film, go to this page on IMDB.

The short version of Open House has since developed a nice life of its own. After premiering at the Seattle Film Festival, the short has also screened at the Slamdance Film Festival in Park City, Utah; The American Cinematheque's Alternative Screen series in Los Angeles; the Maryland Film Festival in Baltimore; and the Pioneer Theater in New York City. The short screens next at the Oldenburg International Film Festival in Germany in September. In reviewing the short, the Baltimore City Paper described it like this: "A tightly wound real-estate agent incites a mob of renegade prospective homebuyers to revolt against the house's rightful owners in this silly and surprising flick."

Please keep in mind that the short version of Open House is not a musical and does not exactly reflect the style of shooting or editing that the feature version would have. Certainly, though, the lessons learned on the short will inform the production of the feature.
